The Season of Giving

Tis' the season for shopping; black Friday, Boxing Day deals, Christmas must have's, this weekend only's; we've got Christmas exactly how it is supposed to be.  It's all about gifts, new toys, new clothing, best electronics, the best of the best.  This season is all about giving and getting the best most expensive gifts.   It seems as though we have completely misunderstood what Christmas is all about.  In fact, we've got it ass backwards.Christmas isn't supposed to be about how much money we have spent or what incredible gifts we have gotten, it's supposed to be about giving to those in need, helping out others, spending quality time with family and friends.  Since when did we all forget what the true meaning of Christmas really was?

Every year there is so much hype and stress over this holiday.  What we have forgotten is that Christmas should remind us to give.  Giving to those in need; the homeless, the less fortunate, the single parents, the children without parents....what happens to those people at Christmas time? Do you think they care about the new iphones/ipads or the best of the bests? Perhaps they just care about where they will lay their head down next, if they're lucky enough to get a meal that day or if they can finally afford to buy some groceries.

Sometimes we don't even know where those people exist or what they look like.  Sometimes they disguise themselves well enough to hide it in front of everyone you know.  Maybe it's your neighbor, your kids best friend, your co-worker, your student, the person you just bought a coffee off of.  Maybe this whole time you've been misunderstanding someone because we're so wrapped up in wrapping gifts.

This Christmas I plan to spend it exactly how I was taught to.  I am going to enjoy spending time with my family and friends.  I am going to be thankful for a roof over my head, the food my family has so happily prepared for us and I am most definitely going to be thankful for being in the present moment and not so much in the presents I receive.  Don't get me wrong, we all love presents but the best part about Christmas to me is watching children's faces with the magic of believing in a Santa Claus.  This year and every year I will continue to try to play Santa Claus to someone because that is what the true meaning of Christmas should be.

"He puzzled and puzzed till his puzzler was sore.  Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. Maybe Christmas, he thought...doesn't come from a store. Maybe Christmas, perhaps...means a little bit more!" -The Grinch Who Stole Christmas
